Each year our students compete against teams from other schools in our district for the title of UIL Academic Champion. This year our meet will be held in Brock on Thursday, December 6th. Please take a few moments to look over the events we have available and encourage your child to sign up for any of the teams they might be interested in joining. Sign ups will be open through Tuesday, September 25th, and coaches will begin narrowing down their teams beginning next week. UIL SIGN UP

4TH & 5TH GRADE

Art- Are you interested in art? In this contest you will study masterpieces created by artists throughout history. You will learn to identify forty paintings by their name and their artist. See Mrs. Craig for more information.

Chess Puzzle- We are excited to offer this team for the first time! If you enjoy playing chess or would like to learn, then this is the team for you. The contest will give students chess puzzles to solve in a timed format. To find out more, see Mrs. Buckner.

Music Memory- If you like music, sign up for Music Memory! For this event, you will learn sixteen different pieces of music along with the composers’ names. This team always has a lot of fun learning the different songs. For more information, see Mrs. Morris for 4th grade or Mrs. Buckner for 5th grade.

Number Sense- If you are a strong mathematician, this is where you belong! These teams will be chosen through math and science classes so there is no need to sign up. If you have questions, please talk to Mrs. Johnson or Mrs. Mauk.

Oral Reading- For this event, each team member will select a poem to read before a judge. If you enjoy speaking in front of others, make sure you sign up for Oral Reading. Mrs. Dial can answer any questions you might have about this event.

Ready Writing- Students who enjoy expressing themselves though writing will love this event! Team members will be given a two prompts to chose from on the day of their competition. They will respond to the prompt of their choice using their best writing skills. If you have questions, see Mrs. Young or Mrs. Ferguson.

Spelling- This event is for all of the super spellers out there! You will practice from a list of 300 words to prepare for a fifty word test. If you would like more information, check with Mrs. Beauvais for 4th grade and Mrs. Shurbet for 5th grade.

5TH GRADE ONLY

Dictionary Skills- This competition relies on a students ability to use the dictionary as the name implies. See Mrs. Bragg if you would like to know more.

Listening- In this contest, students listen to a passage that is read and take notes over it. They are then required to answer questions based on what they heard. If you are a good listener, sign up for this event. See Mrs. Dial for more details.

Maps, Graphs, & Charts- For this event, you will use all your skills to find information in an atlas and also read information from different types of charts and graphs. If you have questions, check with Ms. Moore.

Social Studies- This contest is designed to help you expand your knowledge of history, government, economics, citizenship, and culture. If you would like to know more, check with Mrs. Terry.
